下一屆奧運會即第31屆奧運會將於2016年在巴西舉辦，舉辦城市是里約熱內盧。

2009年10月3日，國際奧會第121次全會在丹麥首都哥本哈根進行，里約熱內盧通過三輪投票擊敗西班牙馬德里、美國芝加哥和日本東京，最終獲得2016年第31屆夏季奧林匹克運動會的舉辦權，巴西成為第一個舉辦奧運會的南美洲國家。
