危險芳鄰！多座爆裂化學物工廠緊臨美國住宅區

至少80萬美國人與危險爆裂物為鄰、卻毫無所悉？美國德州肥料工廠上個月發生大爆炸，現場甚至出現有如核彈爆炸的蕈狀雲，爆炸源頭直指工廠內的硝酸銨(ammonium nitrate)。然而路透社調查發現，這種危險物質遍佈全美各地，不少硝酸銨工廠周圍人煙稠密，萬一發生事故後果不堪設想。

4月17日的爆炸案引發等同2.1級地震的地表搖晃；有14人死亡、200人受傷。現場方圓半英里之地被夷為平地，鄰近的百貨商場和養老院也被炸得面目全非。硝酸銨威力如此強大，美國卻未嚴加控管，放任硝酸銨工廠隨意開設。路透調查，至少有12家硝酸銨工廠周圍一英里內有1萬居民居住，更別提附近還上百間學校、20家醫院、13棟教堂。

以芝加哥的Acid Products Co.工廠為例，2012年這家工廠存放的硝酸銨在1萬到10萬磅之間，危險性十足的工廠卻位於都會區中，附近居民高達2萬4千人。路透表示，全美50州中僅29州提供資料，21州拒絕協助或未能提供完整資料，顯示硝酸銨的潛在威脅遠大於此。1990年以來，業者舉報了380例硝酸銨相關意外，共有8人死亡、66人受傷；但由於當局並未強制提報，實際數字恐遠遠不只如此。
